Caritas Chamber Chorale
Mission Statement
The mission of Caritas Chamber Chorale is fourfold: musical, evangelical, charitable and community-building. The Chorale is dedicated to promoting the art of sacred choral music as well as spreading the Christian message through its music. By performing benefit concerts, the Chorale serves those in need around the world. Further, the Chorale seeks to bring people together, both its members and its audiences, for the purpose of sharing in the beauty of the music and the message, as well as each other’s lives. The group's ultimate goal is to emulate, through its art, the greatest of the Christian virtues: love.
Caritas Chamber Chorale
Caritas Chamber Chorale was founded in 2005 for the purpose of presenting a series of concerts of a cappella sacred music to raise funds for the Adorno Fathers' St. Francis Caracciolo Mission, Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.
The name Caritas Chamber Chorale was chosen to reflect the group’s desire to emulate the greatest of the Christian virtues: love. (The Latin term caritas is translated "charity" or "love.") The singers, who come from various communities and faith traditions, are united in their shared love of choral singing and their desire to aid those in need.
The founder of the group, Barbara Sanderman, has a long history of supporting the African Mission through music and in other ways. Ms. Sanderman was assisted in developing the Chorale by Wayne Dietterick and Stan Szalewicz.
In June of 2005 the Chorale gave its first series of three concerts in Central New Jersey, benefiting the Malnutrition Center of the African Mission.
Since then the members of the Chorale have unanimously expressed a desire to continue to sing together for the love of the art of sacred choral music and for those in need. This year's concerts will again benefit the Malnutrition Center of the St. Francis Caracciolo Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa.
The Adorno Fathers
www.adornofathers.org
The Order known as the Adorno Fathers was founded in Italy in 1588 by St. Francis Caracciolo, Venerable Augustine Adorno and Fabrizio Caracciolo. The founders were dedicated to the service of God and His people through authentic Christian charity and through the cultivation of a great spirit of prayer, especially adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. In addition to the common vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, the founders added a fourth vow: not to aspire to ecclesiastical honors, basically a vow of humility. The priests and brothers of the Adorno Fathers strive to sanctify themselves and the People of God by imitating the Paschal Mystery of Christ in their lives.
The Adorno Fathers first came to the United States in 1930. In December of 1937, they began a long history of ministering to the parish community of St. Joseph in Lodi. In 1962, the Adorno Fathers opened their House of Formation in Ramsey, New Jersey. They opened Immaculate Conception Parish in South Carolina in 1989.
Inspired by the charitable spirit of their founders, the Adornos saw the need to expand as missionaries in developing countries. In 1984, the St. Francis Caracciolo Mission was formed in Nyamilima, currently Democratic Republic of Congo, Africa. The Mission runs a Pastoral Center, parishes, schools, a hospital, a malnutrition center, and a seminary in Goma. In addition to the African Mission, the Adorno Fathers are now also present in India and the Philippines.
The Adorno Fathers are celebrating a very special Jubilee Year from May, 2007 to June 2008. May 24, 2007 marks 200 years since the canonization of one of the Order’s Founders, Saint Francis Caracciolo, and June 4, 2008, marks 400 years since his death. June 4 is also the Feast day of Saint Francis Caracciolo. During this time, numerous activities will be taking place to celebrate the Jubilee including conventions and conferences, liturgies, missions, pilgrimages, publications and this musical offering by Caritas Chamber Chorale.
About St. Francis Caracciolo Mission
Established in 1984, the Adorno Fathers’ St. Francis Caracciolo Mission provides health, educational, and spiritual services to 80,000 people. The order oversees 28 schools, 15 parishes, a hospital, dispensaries, a malnutrition center, and a seminary. The Adorno Fathers, founded in Italy in 1588 by St. Francis Caracciolo, are celebrating a special jubilee year. This celebration begins May 24, 2007, marking 200 years since the saint’s canonization, and concludes on June 4, 2008, the 400th anniversary of his death. Caritas Chamber Chorale is happy to be one of the special events planned to celebrate this Jubilee year.
